Attention Writers, Poets, and Performers working with high school age youth!
Application Deadline: January 31, 2014. Act now to participate!
In conjunction with Art IS Education, Poetry Out Loud is an annual program for high school students, that encourages youth to explore great poetry through memorization and performance. There has been a resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop music. California Poetry Out Loud builds on that momentum by inviting the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into California classrooms.
All Alameda County High School students, grades 9-12, are invited to enter Alameda County’s Poetry Out Loud. School winners advance to the county competition in mid-February, then to the state competition at the State Capitol in Sacramento, in late March. All County level youth participants receive cash prizes, and $100 will be awarded to 1st Place Winner’s school department that facilitated the student’s participation.
