Poetry Inside Out Teaching Artist
Founded in the year 2000, Poetry Inside Out (PIO), a program of the non-profit Center for the Art of Translation in San Francisco, empowers the imagination and builds students’ problem solving, critical thinking, and literacy skills through the translation and composition of poetry. Delivered in a 16-lesson series, the programteaches basic literary translation skills, poetic structure, form, figurative language and creative possibility, and highlights revision, editing, and performance.
Poetry Inside Out Teaching Artists are inspiring individuals who love poetry and are excited to share their passion for language with young people. They are dedicated to the creative, intellectual, and personal growth of their students. They embrace collaboration and are part of an organization that encourages risk-taking and growth. They are committed to developing authentic connections in the classroom, integrating critical thinking with poetry and translation in the development of language skills and original student writing.
New PIO Teaching Artists must participate in a paid 12-hour training session followed by a 16-hour apprenticeship that prepares them to accept placement as a professional Poetry Inside Out Teaching Artist in school sites throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Teaching Artists also receive ongoing professional development and opportunities for creative collaboration in a team, strengthening their practice as artists and teachers.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement a 16-session residency plan, utilizing PIO curriculum, in collaboration with classroom teacher
• Establish teaching schedule in coordination with classroom teacher
• Utilize, modify, and develop PIO-specific instructional tools
• Collaborate with fellow PIO Teaching Artists in team situations
• Assist in editing, publishing and distributing student anthologies for school site
• Coordinate student performance events as scheduled
• Submit invoices, program evaluations, student permissions and other program related paperwork in a timely fashion
• Attend semiannual teaching artist meetings, and communicate and confer with PIO staff as needed
• Perform other duties as requested by PIO staff
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or higher
• Familiarity with the practice and aesthetics of poetry and/or literary translation
• Demonstrated experience as a teaching artist in a K-12 classroom
• Excellent classroom management skills
• Ability to articulate critical thinking in the arts
• Ability to work collaboratively with teaching professionals in a school setting
• Adaptability and flexibility as previous planning meets specific classroom needs
• Awareness of and sensitivity to the creative process of children
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
• Must be out-going, pro-active, upbeat, organized and patient
• Publication of poetry or work in translation
• Knowledge of MS Office
Preferred Qualifications
• Fluency in a language other than English, with an ability to teach in that language a plus
• Experience in constructing and implementing curriculum in a K-12 setting
• Awareness of arts integration frameworks, Common Core Standards and California Language Arts Standards
