Organization Description

ArtWell is a Philadelphia-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing educational, arts-based programs for youth and communities facing discrimination, poverty, violence, and the everyday challenges of growing up. Founded in 2000 in response to chronic community violence in Philadelphia neighborhoods, ArtWell has since partnered with more than 400 organizations, serving more than 41,600 participants across the Greater Philadelphia region.

Arts Focus


Artforms & Experience


ArtWell teaching artists facilitate multidisciplinary arts programs, workshops, and training for youth, adults, educators and professional groups.


Youth Programs include:


The Art of Growing Leaders
Introduces students ages 10-19 to multicultural rites of passage, and enhances their creative leadership skills to help them discover their strengths and improve social action.


Uses the power of West African and Afro-Caribbean music and traditions as a vehicle to engage youth while integrating creative writing for literacy and reflection.


MasterPeace® Program
Engages students and communities in large-scale arts processes such as murals, mosaics and installations to help participants overcome challenges, build bridges and lift up the strengths of their neighborhoods.


We the Poets® Program
Strengthens students literacy and voice while engaging them in poetry writing and reading. Students discuss personal and social issues, explore their emotions and identities, and develop a deeper cultural understanding.
