Biography

TEACHING ARTIST :  Originally from Los Angeles, soprano and Teaching Artist Nicole Taylor is a graduate of the Masters program at The Juilliard School in New York. Since her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2006, Nicole Taylor has won awards in international and American competitions, including the Concours International de Musique de Chambre in France, the Leontyne Price Competition in Atlanta, the Kosciusko Foundation Marcella Sembrich Competition in New York, as well as, international music study grants from the Huntington Beebe Fund in Boston, the Académie Musicale de Villecroze in France, and the Schleswig Holstein Festspiele in Germany. She has appeared in a number of dramatic and operatic roles, including the female leads in Le Nozze de Figaro, Les Dialogues des Carmelites, Die Fledermaus, Cunning Little Vixen, The Turn of the Screw, and Porgy & Bess. Her extensive vocal repertoire includes classical art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries, and solo concert works such as Strauss’ Four Last Songs and Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Ms. Taylor was featured soloist in Zemlinskyʼs Psalm 83, at Ring Festival LA with conductor James Conlon, and has sung in world premiere performances including the Suite for Peace by renowned jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, in a tribute concert featuring jazz greats DeeDee Bridgewater, Lalo Schifrin, B.B. King, and special guest Stevie Wonder; Sir Paul McCartneyʼs oratorio Ecce Cor Meum with the Orchestra of St. Lukeʼs at Carnegie Hall; Eliott Goldenthalʼs opera Grendel directed by Tony Award-winning creative Julie Taymor for Lincoln Center Festival; and Olan Jonesʼ eclectic opera The Woman in the Wall, with Overtone Industries LA. Other highlights include solo recitals at Le Panthéon for the UNESCO Journée International du Jazz Paris, sponsored by the Thelonius Monk Institute LA; at UNESCO World Heritage Site – Pannonhalma Monastery in Hungary; and at Sugrįžimai Festivalis in Lithuania. Nicole Taylor has sung with the opera ensembles of San Francisco Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Sarasota Opera, Lincoln Center Festival and Mostly Mozart Festival (NYC) under the direction of Louis Langrée, John de Main, John Mauceri, Victor De Renzi, James Robinson and Tito Capobianco. as well as with New York Harlem Productions, the international touring company of “Porgy and Bess”, with performances at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Oper Leipzig, Bremen Musical Theater, Kölner Philharmonie, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Komische Oper Berlin in Germany, Teatro Perez Galdos in Spain, Teatro Massimo Bellini in Sicily, and many more. An accomplished recitalist and a passionate teacher, Ms. Taylor has performed more than 150 lecture concerts and music educational outreach programs in 15 countries across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, under the auspices of the Embassies and Consulates of the United States of America, as a key member of the international Arts Envoy Program of the US Department of State since 2010. Pioneering a method which trains the “whole being”, emphasizing self-awareness and the important connections between our singing, musicality, breathing, body alignment, and mindfulness for wellbeing, Ms. 1 of 2 Taylor has taught a series of performance masterclasses for graduate students at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and the Kodaly Institute in Hungary, the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Denmark, Dar Al Kalima University of Arts and Culture in Palestine, and the Franco American Institute in France. She is also a Partner Artist for the New York-based non-profit organization Sing For Hope, the largest recurring Public Arts project in the USA, known for its dedication to Art for All, civic engagement, and cultural diplomacy through music education outreach. Ms. Taylor currently resides in France, where she is a soprano soloist and cantor at the American Church in Paris, a large interdenominational and multicultural congregation coming from more than 40 nations and 35 Christian denominations. Ms. Taylor’s extraordinary talent as a Teaching Artist has made her a world-class performer, having toured from Lithuania to India, from Germany to Jerusalem, and home again.

CULTURAL DIPLOMACY – U.S. ARTS ENVOY : As a cultural envoy of the United States Department of State since 2010, Nicole Taylor has traveled through Europe and the Middle East, offering concerts, masterclasses and educational outreach programs with the aim of promoting understanding, compassionate communication, and building intercultural bridges. The target audiences range from ambassadors and government ministers to underserved and special needs communities. In this capacity, Ms. Taylor has offered more than 150 music education outreach programs in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, India, France, Denmark, Morocco, Libya, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, sharing her expertise as a musician, teacher and wellness educator. She served in 2013-2014 as Director of the GHANEEHA Project, sponsored by the United States Consulate General in Jerusalem, in Israel and Palestine, and Dar al Kalima University of Arts and Culture in Bethlehem. This televised singing competition and music education program provided intensive training in vocal pedagogy, western music, oriental music, as well as extensive performing opportunities to young Palestinians in Bethlehem, Nablus, Ramallah, Jericho, Taybeh, and Jerusalem. In 2015-2016, Ms. Taylor offered a series of masterclasses for students at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and the Kodály Institute in Hungary. In 2017, she designed a multidisciplinary educational program in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States and La Direction des Services Départementaux de l’Éducation Nationale de la Haute Garonne – art, culture, et langues étrangères. Through the spiritual songs of African-American slaves, elementary school children learned US History and gained cultural awareness and understanding through the power of music and singing. In 2018, Ms. Taylor pioneered an interactive concert-conference, integrating audiences of young Moroccans and Libyans, via teleconference and in Facebook Live, at the America House in Casablanca, in collaboration with the Cultural and Public Affairs Sections of the Embassies of the United States in Morocco and Libya. In 2020, at the invitation of the US Embassy France, Ms. Taylor sang the US National Anthem at the NBA Paris Game in front of 15,000 joyful spectators. Despite the extraordinary circumstances of 2021, she was a featured “virtual” Teaching Artist for the Visiting American Professionals Program, sponsored by the US Embassy Iraq in Baghdad, and in collaboration with IREX, an NPO committed to global development and education. Her journey as an Arts Envoy will continue in abroad in 2022.
