Book-It Repertory Theatre

Organization Description

Company Mission: Book-It Repertory Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to transforming great literature into great theatre, through simple and sensitive production, and to inspiring its audiences to read.

Arts Education Mission: To provide an interactive relationship between youth and literature through diverse theatrical productions and educational programs that promote the joy of reading, enhance student and teacher learning, and inspire the imagination.

Founded in Seattle in 1990, Book-It Repertory Theatre believes that reading and literacy are fundamental rights and keys to success. Book-It produces adaptations of books for the stage, serving approximately 20,000 patrons through its main stage production season, and 55,000 young people throughout Washington state with our Arts Education assembly performances, in-classroom performances, workshops, and reader’s theatre scripts.

Book-It Arts Education is guided and inspired by the work of many educators and artists. We are committed to anti-racism, representation, inclusivity, and equity in all of our arts education programming and engagement with students, teachers, and community members. This means our programming is intentionally chosen to represent and celebrate artists and readers of all races, genders, and abilities as we, in partnership as artists and readers, imagine, enact, and reflect on the human experience.

All Arts Education programming is available to Title I schools at no cost through the School Assistance Fund (while funds remain). All other programming is fee-based.

Artforms & Experience

Book-It’s Arts Education program is active in many schools in Washington state, mainly in King County. Our programming includes touring performances (assembly or interactive in-classrom), workshops, residencies, and a reader’s theatre script library.

We work with a wide variety of artists and are always on the lookout for teaching artists, playwrights, actors, directors, stage managers, and designers. We follow the guidelines of the TAG pay-rate calculator to guide our rates of pay.

All of our programming is based in published books or stories in all forms.
