Artforms & Experience

Originally from West Chester, PA, Katie graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University with a BFA in Drama. As an actor, she has performed in everything from musicals to completely original shows in the U.S., London (most notably at Shakespeare’s Globe), and the the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. While at Syracuse, she was a member of the All Star CAST, which pairs undergraduate theatre students with members of the community with disabilities, and she realized that teaching is where her heart lies. In 2010, Katie began the Teen Drama Troupe for GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago. Inspired by the rapid success of this program, Katie founded and still serves as the Executive Artistic Director for the Chicago-based nonprofit organization Artists Breaking Limits & Expectations (A.B.L.E.) with the aim of creating opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and other developmental differences to find the same confidence, friendships, and joy she has found through the arts. Through her work with these programs, she has produced and directed 14 stage productions and 2 feature films, and also authored adaptations of 6 plays from the classical canon.

Katie holds an MA with Distinction in Applied Theatre from The Royal Central School for Speech and Drama. Her dissertation, “Side By Side”, focused on developing creative arts programming for individuals with a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and dementia.

In addition to her relevant arts experience, Katie is also a certified STOTT® Pilates and GYROTONIC® Instructor with over a decade of experience training clients of all ages and abilities to find healing and strength through movement.
