SEEKING DIGITAL MEDIA & PERFORMING ART TEACHERS FOR

FALL 2013 PROGRAM FOR PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

 
The Out of Site Youth Arts Center is seeking experienced teaching artists to become a part of our vibrant non-profit arts center in San Francisco’s Ingleside/Excelsior neighborhood. We are hiring for our fall session, which runs  September 9 – December 17, twice a week from 4pm – 6pm.
 
About the Out of Site Youth Arts Center:
Out of Site offers free after school, weekend and summer programs in visual and performing arts to public high school students in the south part of San Francisco. We are unique as an arts education organization in that community building is at the foundation of what we do. The strength of our work is founded upon the creative, respectful relationships built among faculty, staff, and students. Our programs combine best practices in arts education and youth development. During the fall session we offer 6 visual & performing art programs (architecture, digital media, percussion/digital music, black & white photography, printmaking and performing arts).
 
Candidates must be professional artists and experienced in working with urban high school youth. Our classes have 15:1 student ratio. The teaching artist and the class will be supported by Out of Site’s program staff. Teaching artists are paid hourly as temporary part-time employees, and for class time, prep time, 4 scheduled faculty meetings as well as regular check ins with program staff. There is the possibility to continue teaching in our spring session.
 
We are currently looking to fill 2 positions. We are looking for teaching artists for both the digital media class and for a performing arts class. Class time is spent at Out of Site in the classroom and on field trips (to be organized by the teaching artist). Each session has a culminating event in which student work is performed and exhibited for the public. The teacher has the opportunity to develop a unique curriculum with the guidance of our program staff.
 
Job Description:
Working at Out of Site includes
– Developing curriculum and syllabus in collaboration with Program Director,
– Attending four faculty meetings and participating in professional development activities.
– Having ongoing communication with students, their families, and Program Director regarding student issues.
– Seeking opportunities to collaborate with other Out of Site programs.
– Exposing students to the Bay Area arts scene.
– Developing weekly lesson plans, and arranging supplies with Program Director.
– Curriculum and reflection meetings with Program Director.
– Developing and planning class field trips, and final public exhibition / performance.

• Please propose a 12 week digital media or performing arts project that you would lead with high school students.
• What have you done to develop relationships with and among your students?
• How have you created curriculum that was challenging and engaging for diverse learners?
• Describe a teaching experience when you were thrown a “curveball” and how you handled it?

2. Out of Site will select candidates for a preliminary phone interview.
3. Candidates will be invited to come in for an interview with Out of Site staff and students. They will be asked to bring a presentation of sample work (candidate’s own and former students’) and a proposed curriculum. As part of the interview candidates will be asked to facilitate a 15-minute activity of their design.
