World Art-Making Day

July 19, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

$25 – $125

Teaching Artists have recently expressed the desire to come together, virtually or in-person, to create art and build community outside of the classroom. The TAP team has always prided itself on providing opportunities based on the needs of the Teaching Artist community, and so, we invite you to make art with us at World Art-Making Day!

Brought to you by Community-Word Project and the Teaching Artist Project, World Art-Making Day is for artists of all disciplines who want to #TAP into their creative selves outside of the classroom. Many times as teachers we concentrate on making art for classroom examples. This workshop series will take SEL principles we use in learning spaces and apply them to our own art-making space. Many of us teach SEL through the arts, but are not privileged with the opportunity to practice and experience it ourselves.

We welcome artists at any stage of their practice! WAM Day could be especially nourishing for:
– Arts Administrators who want to make more time for their art
– Veteran Teaching Artists on the verge of burnout
– Artists who are new to New York City
– Community-oriented artists looking for new approaches to art-making
– Students curious about career paths in socially engaged arts

#WAM Day will include morning and afternoon generative sessions designed to unpack our ideas for a shared future. The Teaching Artist Project Team will lead our opening welcome and close for the day, and an elite group of guest artists will facilitate three sessions for participants to choose from. During our morning session, Adriana Guzmán-King will lead “Painting with What you Got,” a workshop where participants envision their personal, professional, or societal futures using found materials from home to create both paint and canvas. The afternoon session will feature “Embracing Identity Through Music” with Jess Dilday, aka “PlayPlay,” an NYC-based DJ, producer, curator, educator, and music scholar. In this session, participants will learn how to use music to explore their own identities as both educators and creative beings with unique life stories and cultural backgrounds. We’ll end the day with a collective meditation and breath-work led by singer/songwriter and Co-Director of the Teaching Artist Project, Dale Novella.

Join us for World Art-Making Day, July 19, 2023. Registration is now open on Eventbrite! Pricing is tiered, so please choose the level that works best for you!
