As one of three artists-in-residence, I collaborate with artists and teachers to plan and implement arts based learning opportunities for children 3-6 years old. We run professional development workshops for the teaching staff and work directly with children in 4 different classrooms. Art as a Way of Learning (c) is our curriculum framework, developed over 25 year period of research and practice. Most recently, we investigated how arts-based learning can support a growth mindset in teachers and children and presented findings at the 2018 NAEYC national conference in D.C. One of the most powerful lessons I have learned form working here is to trust my art form when facing classroom challenges – the direct act of engaging in theater/storytelling/creative drama immediately activates the wholeness of each person in the room. When in doubt – tell a story, play a game or ask students to act it out.
